Admin Halloween isn’t just for kids — the pets get their turn too. Pet stores around the country are running free Halloween events through the end of October: costume contests, free treats, and photo ops. Here’s what’s on the calendar. All of these are free and in-store; just show up (costumes encouraged but not required).
Free pet Halloween events
- Petco — PetcoWeen Party & Costume Contest — Saturday, October 17, 2–4pm. Dress up your pet for the costume contest, with free treats and a Halloween photo opportunity.
- Petco — Trick-or-Treat in store — October 17–31, all day. Bring your pup in costume any day through Halloween for a free treat.
- PetSmart — Meet the Spooky Pets — Sunday, October 18, 12–2pm. A free family event to meet some of PetSmart’s spookier animals.
- Petco — Finley’s dog food tasting — Sunday, October 18, 2–4pm. Free Finley’s dog food samples at select stores.
- Pet Supplies Plus — Halloween event — Saturday, October 24, 12–2pm. Pet costume contest, free samples, and Halloween fun (activities vary by store).
- Petco — PetcoWeen Portraits + free treat — Saturday, October 24, all day. Halloween portraits for your pet plus a free treat at participating stores.
- Petco — Hill’s Fresh dog food tasting — Saturday, October 24, 2–4pm. Free Hill’s samples for your pup.
- PetSmart — Tricks for Treats — Sunday, October 25, 10am–4pm. Halloween treats, photos, and activities for the whole family.

Good to know
Dogs should be leashed and pets in costume need to be comfortable — if your cat hates the pirate hat, skip it. Events marked “select” or “participating” stores vary by location, so call your local store before making the trip. And the food tastings are a genuinely good way to try a new brand before buying a full bag.
